Tillbakablick på Obamas år

2009 präglades av finansiell och ekonomisk kris, men började ändå i någon form av politisk hoppfullhet med en ny president i USA som betonade förändring och samarbete. Och visst var Barack Obama ett stort lyft för USA och världen, men han har knappast infriat särskilt många av de, visserligen stundtals orealistiska, förhoppningar som människor haft på honom. Han har inte lyckats få stopp på det folkrättsvidriga nybyggandet av israeliska bosättningar på palestinsk mark, Gaza är fortfarande satt under blockad och fredsprocessen är iskall med Likud vid makten och Hamas starkare än någonsin. Fånglägret på Guantánamo är ännu inte stängt. Trots utsträckta händer mot Iran och Nordkorea, så har resultaten uteblivit, vilket visserligen kanske är svårt att lasta Obama för.
Det ironiska är dock att hans nya retorik belönades med Nobels fredspris av den norska Nobelkommittén, trots bristen på resultat. Och för att liksom understryka bilden av att det till stor del rör sig om retorik, så klarlägger Obamas administration strax efter att de meddelats att Obama får fredspriset att USA fortfarande inte har för avsikt att skriva under konventionen om förbud mot personminor, som de flesta demokratier gjort (och för vilken fredspriset 1997 gick till organisationen ICBL). Ironin fullbordades med Obamas ankomst till Köpenhamnskonferensen där han förordade handling, men (bakbunden av senaten) bara kunde erbjuda tomma ord.

My exact sentiments exactly and I would say there is steady but ongoing runble with Obama especially among the youths. Guantanamo Bay is most dissapointing and indeed the irony of winning the Nobel Peace Prize. Also, his reactionary approach to issues and crisis facing the nation is disheartening.
I appreciate the challenges he faced and faces when he assumed the position as President but at the same time, he has made a lot of promises that are unfulfilled. Only time will tell how this all plays out.

The irony is that his new rhetoric was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, despite the lack of results. And for that, and underline the impression that it is largely these are rhetoric, it clarifies Obama Administration shortly after they announced that Obama may be the Peace Prize to the United States still has no intention to sign the convention banning antipersonnel mines, like most democracies done (and for the peace prize 1997, the organization ICBL).
